Two home runs and a well-deserved win for Denmark in the opening game

Israel and Denmark opened the Championship. The Danish went into the lead in the first inning and held it the rest of the way. Thanks to Daniel Julenon and Franklin Fernandez, who each hit a home run, there was a safe gap in the scoreline for most of the game.

Israel got in front with Rosenfeld’s RBI in the top of the first, but Denmark answered. Hits by Anders Jorgensen and Alexander Brewerton drove in runs to put Denmark ahead 2-1. With the bases loaded and one out, it didn’t look good for Israel, but Spira got out of the jam with only two runs against.

Julenon’s home run with Jorgensen on second base increased the gap to 4-1. Rosenfeld pulled one down in the top of the third, but Fernandez homered to left field in the fourth inning.

There were no runs in the fifth inning, but the Isrealis didn’t give up. Scioscia stole two bases and Tomer’s long hit into center field brought him home.

However, Denmark was still in the lead by two runs and handled top of the seventh inning well enough to finish the game.

Post-game comments

"It wasn´t a great game," Denmark manager Jens Terkelsen said afterward. "We made the classic mistakes. We had the two home runs and that saved us, because even our defence wasn´t that good. We have to do better than that if we want to beat the better teams at this tournament."

Lukas Nejedly, coach of the Israel team was satisfied as well: "We fought well and the Danish had to fight for the result until the very end. We surprised even ourselves and I hope we will carry on with the same quality."
